There are ants in my sugar! Or, a first week in Mauritius

Aldabra Giant Tortoise

There are ants in my sugar. If there is one thing I can respect about ants, it's their dedication to the discovery of new lands, they are the tiniest nomads and most diligent of scavengers. So, of course there are ants not just in my sugar but in every other possible place. I just considered that the cause of my itchy inner ear is most likely ant-related.

I shouldn't brood over this minor home invasion - last week I landed in Mauritius, the place I put down some roots for the forseeable future, and settled in my new home at a beach house in La Preneuse. I've already met some Giant Aldebra Tortoises on Ile aux Aigrettes, startled some geckos in the shower, seen a good number of reef fish and patted a fruit bat.

All in all, excellent progress.

After a wonderful week of beach dwelling, barbeques, diving and wildlife inductions, the hard work starts tomorrow. Day one of field training. Watch this space!
